HT0104 - M1A1HA Abrams (Operation Iraqi Freedom),
Platoon Commander, 2nd Platoon,
C Company,  1st Marine Division
The M1A1HA Abrams (named for General Creighton W.
Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and commander of the 37th
Armored Battalion) performance in the Gulf Conflict removed any
doubts about it's ability as a main battle tank. In 1972 the U.S.
Military wanted a totally new designed tank with up to date
equipment and futuristic armor. It had to be something completely
different from the old tanks of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The
military wanted it to have the ability to be modernized as
technology advanced. So in 1973 developmental contracts were
awarded and in 1976 field testing began. In 1980 the U.S. Military
officially commissioned  the 62 ton Abrams but it would be more
than 20 years before it was put into an actual battle field
environment in the Gulf region. Original M1 versions were armed
with the 105mm cannon, the same as one of it's predecessors,
the M60. But that is where the similarities end, the 105mm
cannon had a sophisticated fire control system that gave the
cannon stabilization even on the move. Powered by a 1500 HP
gas turbine engine  and revolutionary armor along with hundreds
of other state of the art features, the M1 was a fast moving gun
platform. In 1984, the next version of the M1, the M1A1 was given
a 120mm smooth bore cannon. Another variant, the M1A1HA (HA
- Heavy Armor) greatly improved on the armor by using depleted
uranium.  The Abrams has all four main factors for a superior
tank:
Advanced sensors and controls - allows the Abrams to locate and
destroy targets.
Superior mobility - very capable of getting to targets and evading
the enemy.
Terrific firepower - 120mm cannon capable of destroying almost
any target with a wide range of ordnance.
Armor - advanced armor gives the Abrams a high chance of
survivability if hit.
