The M46 Patton tank was named in honor of the famous US General George S. Patton
Jr. It basically was an improved M26 Pershing and was meant to replace the M26 and
M4 Sherman.  800 of the M26s became M46s when they received a new and more
powerful engine and transmission with rearward-facing mufflers on each fenders and a
main gun with a bore evacuator. A further 360 were converted to M46 standards plus
they received improved braking, cooling and fire suppression systems, improved
electrical equipment and a new designation, M46A1.

On July 27, 1953 the Korean War finally came to an end when the UN and North
Korean leaders signed an agreement. This only brought a technical end to the war with
hostilities and ill-will between the two sides still existing today. An area referred to as
“The Iron Triangle” consisted of Pyonggang as the northern point, Kumhwa was the
southeast tip and Chorwon was the southwest tip. This area was the meeting place of
rail lines and roads so it became a very much sought after zone. Two of the most
notable battles that took place in the Chorwon section of the “Iron Triangle” were the
“Battle of White Horse Hill” and the “Battle of Old Baldy”. When the war had ended the
village of Chorwon was completely destroyed as both sides tried to claim the area. After
the Korean War Chorwon ended up belonging to South Korea. The village has since
been rebuilt into what is now a city with a population of 100,000 plus citizens. Portions
of the devastation have been left untouched to act as a reminder of what took place
during the Korean War.
