| The F-100A was notorious for difficult handling with a tendency to go into a flat spin forcing the pilot to eject. Even then there was a possibility of the aircraft striking the pilot. Another problem was a tendency for the J-57 engines to flame out causing several crashes. The F-100A finally became operational with the USAF in September 1955 but in 1958 the accident prone F-100A began a phase out that was completed in 1961. By this time 47 of the 203 F-100As were lost in accidents. The RoCAF (Republic of China Air Force) on Taiwan was the only air force other than the USAF to use the F-100As. 15 F-100As arrived in 1959 followed by 65 in 1960. Another 38 former ANG aircraft followed bringing the number of F-100As to 118. The RoCAF ended up with over 50% of all F-100As produced. Patterned after the USAF the RoCAF is organized into Wing/Group/Squadron. The 499th TFW (often referred to in some publications as the 2nd TFW), 11th Fighter Group comprised of the 41st, 42nd, 43nd TFS. On November 1, 2004, the 41st and 42nd TFS were upgraded to the TFG status as part of a large restructuring.
