The Bf-110 was originally designed as a fighter-bomber but with the success of the “F”
variant and the increasing night-bombing by the British the last variant, the “G”, was
used mostly as a night-fighter. Occasionally the “G” was used for day operations
against unescorted US bombers. As the war progressed deeper into Germany these
planes were based closer to Berlin as a desperation defensive effort. Equipped with
sophisticated electronics and manned by veteran pilots the Bf-110Gs became the British
night-bomber’s worst nightmare.

On March 15-16, 1944 Oberfeldwebel Helmut Treynogga and radio-operator Heinz
Schwarz from 6./NJG departed Echterdingen on board Bf-110G-4/R1 WNr.5545,
2Z+OP. Their mission was to intercept an RAF bomber formation headed for Munich.
When the night was over the crew had landed in Dubendorf, Switzerland and were
taken into custody. There are two theories about why this happened. One is the crew
defected and the other is they got lost because of a radio failure and their fuel was
running out. The two were returned to Germany about 5 weeks later.
