In response to the Douglas DC-4 Lockheed developed the Constellation. As more powerful
engines were developed the Constellation was stretched 21 feet and improvements made
resulting in the L-1049G Super Constellation. The development of the L-1049G improved
range with the addition of wing-tip tanks. The more powerful engines made it necessary to
use large propellers that required the aircraft to sit quite high off the ground. A triple tail was
developed because the size of a single tail would have been too large to fit in any hangar.

Air France L-1049G-82-98 msn 4623 was delivered on August 24, 1955 and entered service
on September 11, 1955. Air France and Aeroflot signed an operating agreement that
allowed each airline to make twice weekly flights between Paris and Moscow. On August 3,
1958 Air France made the first non-stop passenger flight between the two cities. The flight
took six hours since they no longer had to stop in Prague. The aircraft was Lockheed L-
1049G F-BHBD piloted by Captain Damour. In 1967 F-BDBH was withdrawn from service
and scrapped.
